We know that teenagers are 'digital natives'...but what about primary aged pupils (in Britain, that is pupils aged 5-11)? Many of my pupils use the gmail, msn, iPods, etc, and they're positively addicted to their Playstations and Wiis; however, many of our parents may be even more suspicious of the 'dangers' of the internet than those of older kids.

How can we develop 'flatclassroom' projects to help seven, eight and nine-year-old pupis to learn together?

Great comment about the dangers of the web. I agree that parents of younger digital natives are more concerned. I think any collaborative project must begin with workshops for parents to help them understand what is trying to be accomplished. Also involving them in every step of the project will help them see the benefits of collaboration.

I'm wondering what the content of the projects would look like. Younger children love to talk about themselves and their environment I'm thinking that the first projects would be showing what their school life is like. I think this sets itself up for some great comparing and contrasting different schools in different parts of the world. Anyone game to try?

I have begun developing my program for my students' return in two weeks. My project is Creative Web Tools For and By Kids inspired by the Flat Classroom Project. I am looking for other 3rd through 5th grade classrooms who want to trailblaze for me. Here are the details:

Creative Web Tools For and By Kids is a project designed for students, ages 8 to 12, to use emerging technologies for engaging, thinking, learning, collaborating, creating, and innovating. The focus is on the use of free, open-source, or minimal cost tools, so the project can be replicated. An underlying goal is to demonstrate how advanced technological applications for enhancing learning can be implemented with only a computer and Internet access.

Please let me know if you would like to collaborate, have suggestions, etc.

FYI - I am creating a companion website - Wee Web Wonders is an interactive site to showcase educational and creative uses of the major web tools used in the Creative Web Tools For and By Kids program.

Hi Purti, That sounds great! I know the festival of "Makar Sankranti" is coming soon and we are very excited to learn about it. Will it be possible for you to take pictures or videos of the kites flying, and also some pictures of your students with…

I guess the pertinent thing is to discuss at the beginning of the year. If the enthusiasm exists there must be possibilities.
