My Ph.D is in Educational Technology. I taught biology & English in the public school system for 12 years an am in my second year at Illinois State teaching in the Curriculum and Instruction department.
Have used 21classes to get my future teachers to blog. I love it as a way to increase classroom community and level of reflection. I've used wikis and skype as well. Love all sorts of web 2.0 tools!

Ning is amazing. It has the facebook/myspace layout that the students love. It also had a great forum section that I love. In the forum section, students have discussions on topics we covered in class. They are free to start discussions there about other topics as well. The more we used it last year, the more I felt comfortable in letting them take the reigns. I promoted several students who loved the site to administrator. As admins, they had the ability to delete duplicate topic discussions or ones they deemed inappropriate. They were a great help to me!
Ning allowed preteens to do what was natural for them - socializing. It allowed me to discuss online issues - safety, revealing too much info, posting pics, etc. in a fun way.
* I didn't enable to chat room - just the forum and they had their own pages to chat on as well.
I'm excited to read your proposal! Glad to have another Walden colleague out there! I am currently working on IRB approval for some research about how allowing pre-service teachers to blog about what they're learning as a student and as a student teacher. I'd like to look at sense of community as well as depth of reflection (compared maybe to a class where their reflections are written in papers, and not shared with a group!) Did I spark any ideas or helpful suggestions?
Hello Darci!!! You're my hero. Congrats on graduating from Walden in 05. Hopefully, I'll be done next. I'm currently doing my dissertation on the impact of collaborative tools on ethnocentrism. This research will be completed during the flat classroom project. As soon as I get my prospectus approved, I'll share it on this Ning. Thanks for responding and I really look forward to sharing with you!!
Hi there Sharon, Firstly the challenge you face is universal! I'm from a school in Australia and while we have many teachers who are very progressive and innovative, it is often in "pockets" rather than across whole schools. As far as your adminis...
Let me see about getting a class to try out a wiki. . .we have 8 grade 5 classes. Maybe we could join up one in each school? Give me a sense of ideas which you were hoping to do? I am open to all ideas
thanks
Rob
