Handshake summary from Helen, Abena and Xavier

The handshake is the first contact, the first impression students make with their team. Therefore, it is important that students and participants introduce themselves and become familiar with each other.  This handshake also sets the mood of the project and motivates and engages students.  No matter the age of the student,…See More

Hmmm!  The name doesn't ring a bell.  There are quite a few international schools in Japan. Did she enjoy it?  I'm loving it!

Hi Helen!

Rest is very important and it is very late! If you work in middle school you really need your sleep! I would not be up this late but I officially start my new job on Thursday so this is a great chance for me to do some catching up. I look forward to working together!

Hi Helen! I teach technology as well, but for 3yr olds to 14yr olds. It is challenging but fun and ever-changing! We have Google Apps for Education for the students and staff this year. The students are really doing well with it. The teachers only use what they need...
I'm also doing a Voicethread project with Marta Lavista in Flat Classrooms with my 6th graders. They will be commenting on heroes. This is a first for me, too. My 5th graders are writing stories for the icollaboratory project and they are having fun writing scary stories! I would love to know what you're doing with your other students!

#10: Giving Student Choices and the Importance of Mistakes:

This year I decided I would give my sixth graders (all 57 of them) choices on their Digitween Action Project.   They could choose who they worked with, what their topic would be, and what platform they would use for their presentation.     While I did set some tentative deadlines, limitations on how large their group could be and require they run their topic through me,  I gave them flexibility in their platform.  I had the…

#11: Keeping Your Sanity While Managing a Long Term Project

While I knew the Digitween Project my 6th graders were doing would include many of the ISTE Nets standards (communication & collaboration, research & fluency, digital citizenship), I didn’t realize how important their mistakes and trials would be in pushing them to use the other ISTE Nets standards (creativity & innovation; critical thinking, problem solving and decision making; and…

What's the big deal about a handshake?

While teaching overseas, I moved to a different country about every three years.  Where once I dreaded starting fresh and meeting new people, I began looking forward to those face-to-face handshakes.  Close your eyes and try to remember when you met someone for the first time.  Now imagine that experience online. How do you take those experiences and move them online?

This is what I have gleaned from the handshakes created…
