The Primary Years Program in the IB. How might those of us in the PYP, using inquiry based learning, collaborate across the nations using any elements of web2.0? (e.g. wikis, Skype, Ning, blogs)
Leigh, the community at PYP threads started by Kathy Epps looks interesting and vibrant. I challenge you to join and share what develops back here on this Ning in terms of global collaborative projects.

Preparing for the new school year

I was part of the Flat Classrooms Elluminate seminar on the web on Wednesday (of 63 people), where Julie and Vicky gave a great presentation on international classroom collaboration. I'm interested in participating in something for our two Grade 5 classes here - total around 30 students. We are in a PYP school (within the IB) so there is an emphasis on inquiry based learning. Our international school is in Baku, Azerbaijan.

I'm hoping that there are folk who might wish to have a conversation ab… Continue

Hi Leigh - thanks very much for passing on my request. Our Grade 5 classes are just starting a unit called "Pattern, rhyme and rhythm" They will be reading and writing poetry, and also writing picture books illustrating the PYP attitudes, If you are interested, I'll keep in touch, and let you know if there are areas in which your students can collaborate.
To send a message to the group, go to the group main page, and on the left of the page, near the top is an envelope with the message "Send to group" I hadn't tried it before!

Hi Leigh
Don't get discouraged! OK, our teachers here have only been back 2 days, in fact over the next 2 days I am running PD showing how the Ning works. I will show them this NIng and also talk about collaboration opportunities.
Also, we have technology integration facilitators starting to kick in as of next week and they will be meeting with the yar levels and helping plan the units of inquiry.
Also, you are welcome to join our school Ning at http://elearning4life.ning.com/ We have a few international people with us. You could contact some of our teachers directly, however I will try to find some connections for you over the next week. OK, I see you are Grade 5, we have some excellent Gr 5 teachers!

Hi Leigh
Thanks for starting a PYP group on this Ning. I will share this with my teachers at Qatar Academy in the PYP area and encourage them to come in and interact with you.

I've created Flat Classrooms group called PYP, which is the primary year's program for the IB. Please join if you're using inquiry based learning and want to explore possibilities of student and teacher international collaboration. Strangely enough, in March, 08, I attended a PD session in Lisbon called Collaboration in the PYP. I was a bit slow to catch on that they were talking about teacher and student collaboration. :-) I was taken by how empowering collaboratio was for us as teachers and knew that I had to implement the approaches in my classroom. I wish for my students the empowerment that comes from connections. The PYP is great but I want all of my students to be reaching their potential and that is not happening at this stage. While Flat Classrooms will not be the panacea for all out woes, the witness from others (albeit mostly secondary classes) is encouraging.

I've had one class into blogging two years ago and am keen to get my primary kids creating a wiki in the new school year, but also working together with other students from around the world. I am at a school where there are 47 nations represented but even so we are on one campus and need more exposure to the rest of the world.
