Flat Safety to Virtual Safety

I am interested in moving forward with my language arts classroom -- forward into the collaborative world of the internet with my students. I've tried some pbwiki with the few computers and fifty-minute periods we have.

I've also thought about Internet safety after watching the eSchool News video, PEW studies, and PBS Frontline site. Here are my first thoughts:

The photos seem OK now. The videos however, even if labelled as "share only with friends" still allow the embed and share options. I wonder if that can be turned off for education nings as a safety feature. I'd hate for a kids video to show up on you tube. Sheri

I asked Ning about your question - here was the answer:

"It appears that any photos you uploaded before you change the setting individually retain the previous sharing default. You have to go into those photos and change their individual share setting (looking at an individual photo, use the edit photo option)."

So, it looks like you have to go edit the photo to change the setting. Will you let me know if that works for removing the embed, b/c in my private Ning, I've not noticed embed codes.

I've ordered the Digital Citizenbook and am looking at the info on the digiteen and Digital Citizenship sites --- those involved have started a thorough task to integrate into the digital age with safety in mind.

I've already signed up for Digiteen project and am watching that grow. I will participate as it develops and as I have ideas.

I have a question though about NING photos: I've noticed that even when "allow only friends" is selected, that the "embed" option is still in place, which means that the picture can be embedded into any webpage. Is there a way to turn off the "embed" button, especially for K12(7-12) ning sites?

Great! Welcome. You might also look at the Digiteen project we had a small group on that project, but we may see if we can find small groups of schools to run the project themselves. We used the PBS website to begin there. I would love to talk about it.

Hi there Sharon, Firstly the challenge you face is universal! I'm from a school in Australia and while we have many teachers who are very progressive and innovative, it is often in "pockets" rather than across whole schools. As far as your adminis...

Let me see about getting a class to try out a wiki. . .we have 8 grade 5 classes. Maybe we could join up one in each school? Give me a sense of ideas which you were hoping to do? I am open to all ideas thanks Rob
