I teach 9th Grade Civics and Geography in Kimberly, WI. I am looking to open up my classes to collaborate with others around the world. I would like to break down the walls and open up the students minds.

I teach a 9-12 grade English Skills class in St. Petersburg, FL. Small class of 11; 4 bright students, the rest struggling, all needing some motivation. Would love to get a fun collaborative project going.

Sharing tutorials and information to help

The video forum is a great place to share tutorials and information about HOW to do things. I think we should share our flat classroom produced videos and tutorials. Remember to tag them and it will become useful to find things. Also, let us know how we may improve this ning site to help you discuss this important topic.

Vivki, how do we get started communicating?

That's a great idea - thanks!! I've looked at lulu before, but never had anything to publish and though we've thought in the past of selling a dvd we make ourselves, we've never really thought through it very far. Perhaps this is the time! :)

Hi! As for content, I keep thinking about using the class and what they do to tell the school's story. I'm always asked to take pictures of events, etc, and though I use those for the yearbook, they don't get used much elsewhere. I was thinking along the lines of documenting the school year through different media and opening a bridge of communication that hasn't been explored beyond the school's website between the community, students and staff. I'm trying to look through tools now and pull my thoughts together, which is definitely the most difficult part. :) I'm not sure how these thoughts would work when trying to collaborate with another school, but I'm open to other ideas and possibilties that would allow that. So... yeah! :)

Hi Vicki,
Thanks for the welcome! I did fill out two applications for the Flat Classroom project; one for each of my semesters in our block schedule. Is that the same thing you are referring to or is there something else I need to look for?

Vicki, a while back you asked where our 1st grader is in school; he's currently in the public schools in Princeton, NJ. I don't have a clear sense of who the other pro-2.0 parents/teachers are, but the more I read about the great things that are starting to happen, the more I want to find the other members of that "tribe."

I viewed some of the PBS and Pew documents/videos. I've discussed with my own granddaughters who have MySpace accounts. They pretty much validated the PEW/PBS/Frontline view: they ignore any fishing into their personal lives, chat only with those they know, and talk to their parents about anything inappropriate. I'll check back at the Digiteen site as the summer closes. I'm still thinking about the fact that even "friend" videos can be embedded elsewhere. Is there a Ning widget that tracks links or embeds from a site? So if someone links or embeds a picture, the widget documents that?

Thanks for the welcome! Do you know any connections with people who are doing National Board?

I am also wanting to do blogging with my first graders- or at least some way to get them published- but I haven't found a form that I am really satisified with or that isn't blocked by my district.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've already signed up for Digiteen project and am watching that grow. I will participate as it develops and as I have ideas.

I have a question though about NING photos: I've noticed that even when "allow only friends" is selected, that the "embed" option is still in place, which means that the picture can be embedded into any webpage. Is there a way to turn off the "embed" button, especially for K12(7-12) ning sites?
