I am the media specialist in a K-8 private school in Owatonna, MN. I am quite sure we have willing Grade 4 and Grade 5 classroom teachers interested in collaboration. It will be new to us as we have yet to collaborate on a project with…"
I recently completed a Masters in Library Media and am VERY new to Web 2.0 and the educational applications. My current (and 1st position) is in a preK-8 school primarily working with preschool - 6th grade. My prior experience is in the elementary classroom.
Hi Sharleen I'm afraid our Grade 4 teachers don't feel ready for our collaborative project yet - they're keen to do it, but later in the year. I'll contact you again to see if you are able to fit it in at that stage. Sorry to have jumped the gun!
Thank you for the suggestion to join Lisa parisi's wiki. I looked at her site and think this would be a good place to start. There is so much our students (and I) need to learn as this will be our 1st Web 2.0 experience - and it's collaborative!
Keep in touch about where you are in this project - or any other others you have been investigating.
All the best to you as you begin the school year.
We begin school on Sunday, and I have been thinking about how best we can work together. I looked at Lisa Parisi's wiki
and wondered whether we should join that instead of starting something new. I have written to ask her how she feels, and will come back to you when she responds.
I hope this is the start of a very good year for you.
Thanks for bookmarking my site. Good luck as you begin to explore Web 2.0. By the looks of things, you're well on your way. Joining this ning is a great step forward. VoiceThread is a great tool. I've been trying it out with my students at my school but filters make things difficult for us. Lots of work to be done educating our network administrators about the educational benefits of what they categorise as 'chatrooms'!
We have two sections of 4th graders - each approx. 20 students each. That number will change a bit before school begins here on Sept. 2nd. I like the project theme of favorite author, book and the use of Voicethread. Let's do this.
There is a lot of work to be done on my end as our school is new to Web 2.0 tools and the idea of posting anything on the Web. Lots of parent/student/administrative work to be done.
I am willing to try whatever best connects our students. We'll learn together.
Hey there. This was the comment I shared with Nerine. Let me know your thoughts on how we can all 3 work together. We have 5 sections of 4th graders about the same size, so that would work out nicely if we wanted to pair a class to class. If Sharleen would like to do a couple of classes, and I do a couple that would be ok too. I think doing something in October for Library Month is a good idea. Maybe we could give each student an author to share about (which we compile onto a Voicethread) and then have them record comments about the author and/or their favorite book by that author. Would your kids be able to speak English or would language be an issue? (sorry if that's a silly question- this is very new and exciting to me) What time zone are you in? Voicethread wouldn't matter, however if we wanted to try to teleconference via Skype I doubt we could coordinate that part. We could make a video and I could skype it to you and let you show your kids and vice versa to introduce each other. Please feel free to tweak these thoughts...
During the month of September, it is Ramadan, and as our school is predominantly Muslim, we have a shorter working day, so it will take time to get into a project. However I am very keen to begin planning etc. October is International School Library month, with the theme Literacy and Learning at your school library http://www.iasl-online.org/events/islm/ so that might be a place to start?
I'll be in touch again soon.
This sounds like a good match. We are also on a fixed schedule and the level of collaboration with teachers is yet to be determined. Our school begins the 1st week of Sept. I would be very interested in working with you on developing a collaboration piece; a good way for both of us to get started. We have no after school program in our school, but I could certainly work during the school day with students in any of your grade levels (2-5).
I will be traveling the next 5 days and away from my computer a bit; but will check in when I can. Thanks for your offer Nerine!
I am the teacher librarian at the Primary School of Qatar Academy in Doha, Qatar. I too have recently completed a Masters, am new to Web 2.0, have moved into my first full time library role...... I see students from Gr 2 - 5. We have a fixed schedule, and until school begins I am not sure how much collaboration with teachers will be possible, but would you be interested in linking up with a couple of classes and sharing some ideas on reading and authors, or other library related topics? Or possibly organise something with an after school group?
